5th Ever Los Angeles Old Time Social
Ever wondered how the heck I became a square dance caller?
Well… I started by taking the caller’s workshop at the Old Time Social! You should too! The next LA Old Time Social is this Thursday, Friday, & Saturday. And you can take the very same dance calling workshop this upcoming Saturday with Susan at 4pm at Farmlab [Farmlab.org, 1745 N. Spring St, Unit 4, 90012].
The Los Angeles Old Time Social is a three-day festival celebrating old time music, dance, and American folk culture, hosted by none other than our beloved squarevolution square dance band, Triple Chicken Foot. My favorite part of the weekend is the Saturday night square dance and the daytime workshops. You can take clawhammer banjo, dance calling, clogging, singing, fiddle, etc…and HELLO! ALL THE WORKSHOPS ARE TOTALLY FREE! Plus there is a cakewalk and the prom of all square dances at night!! Imagine dancing the night away to live music outside in a wonderful unique urban spot [farmlab] right under the Spring St. bridge downtown.
In addition to Saturday night, there are two amazing concert nights scheduled on Thursday and Friday nights. You can actually hear Triple Chicken Foot sing [they don't get to do that too much at the dances], imagine that. They are quite good might I add, and I hear they have a new chart topping album out as well.
all the info for the whole festival is here: http://oldtimeisagoodtime.com
The LAOTS is sure to be a most fantastic affair, not to be missed….. uh….unless you are at Tribal Fest….. errrrrrr [like me]…. But if you are in the LA vicinity – GO!– and especially go take the caller’s workshop led by Susan Michaels!

Rad Videos!
I finally figured out how to embed video into my blog… watch out this St. Patty’s Day may be a cavalcade of video updates. I’m overdue for some blog updating anyway, so you can bear with it!
Check out this fantastic video I shot of Fishtank Ensemble at Bordello for last month’s Malabomba:
Here is a video of Triple Chicken Foot with Ruth Alpert at the Old Timey Winter night that I curated back in December. The next HM157 squaredance is on April 17th 2010 – so mark your calendars for that ![]()
And this in a grand clip from 1928 of The Ingenues playing a tune on the banjo. So charming and cute! Thanks to Auriana for finding this gem.
I need to pick up my banjo more often! shame on me.

LA Weekly Slideshow
The HM157 Old Timey Nite show went on without a hitch! It was such a lovely night and I adore all of the performers. It was nice to take an evening and attempt to be present in holiday splendor without rushing around or planning ahead. It was extra special because my longtime friend (from Alemany days!), Liz Ohanesian, covered the night for the LA Weekly with photographer Shannon Cotrell. The evening was featured in a slideshow on the Weekly website. You can see the slideshow and Liz’s narration here. Below I posted some of my favorite photos. All the photos are by the lovely Shannon Cottrell.
MERRY CHRISTMAS! xoxo
An Old Timey Winter Nite
I am curating my first show on Dec. 20th inside beautiful Victorian mansion, HM157, with a fantastic mix of old time music, tribal bellydance, Appalachian clogging, Gyspy fusion, storytelling, performance art, and more! This is a very important nite to me. I get to combine two things I love so very much old timey American folk music and tradition with world music and fusion bellydance. It’s very exciting!
Come join us as we create unique collaborations and celebrate the season – you don’t want to miss this special evening as we resist corporate co-option of the holidays and celebrate community love and spirit with some old timey goodness. Maybe you will get lucky under the mistletoe? Perhaps Krampus will come for a visit? Can I really restrain myself from calling a dance?
Find out on December 20th!
hope to see you there!!!
