Peak Colors!
A couple of weeks ago Julie and I went on a hike from Deep Gap to Raven’s Rock south on the Appalachian Trail. If you remember my post about Standing Indian, this was the same trail head, but we went the other way on the AT.
What perfect timing to get out in the forest; the trees were brilliant golds, oranges, and reds. The leaves were so translucent – a veritable stained glass canopy. We hiked for three hours and had a lovely picnic with a splendid view… errr and then we hiked three hours back – it was a killer long hike, but so rewarding and fun. I learned what a rhodotunnel is from Julie. I’ll have to get a good photo of one on my next hike, so you can see one. Happy FALL everyone!!!!

Standing Indian
On the Standing Indian Trail
Before Erin left town, we spent one day hiking Standing Indian in the Nantahala National Forest. Standing Indian is a summit on the AT. We had a lovely picnic at the top of the mountain in the laurel forest at the top of the mountain. It was rad running into through hikers (folks who are walking the whole thing) on the Appalachian trail who had just started their journey in North Georgia at the Southern end. It would be such an epic experience to hike the AT! I just got my very first pair of nice hiking boots and am breaking them in, but I am ready to do some more hiking; I miss my hiking buddy Erin! Hi Erin!

Hiking Blood Mountain
The Appalachian Trail is a major hiking trail on the East Coast; it stretches all the way from Maine to Georgia. It is like the Pacific Crest trail in the West. The first time I got my feet on the AT was when Erin, Matt, Terran & I hiked up Blood Mountain one lovely Saturday afternoon.
Blood Mountain is the highest peak on the AT in Georgia so the views of the surrounding mountains were spectacular. The name Blood Mountain comes from a battle the Creek and Cherokee fought in the 17th century. The battle was specifically fought on the mountain near “Slaughter Gap.” Gotta love these names… jeeez.
